2. Before the Adventure There are Other Happenings
It was 3 am when my ever faithful mobile phone rang its programmed alarm to wake me up. I opened my eyes in the darkness of the room, the only light source being a salt lamp behind the armchair. Despite the 5 hours’ rest, my sleep was deep and refreshing and as I stretched out an arm to shut the alarm off I saw my black rucksack lying on the floor in the far side of my room. I suddenly remembered what a special day that was and also that I had no more than half an hour to get ready.
Anxiously, I got out of bed, whooshed into the bathroom, washed my face, ran into the kitchen and gobbled some breakfast down. Then I came back to my room, made my bed and changed my clothes. I unplugged the TV and the computer to make sure the house was safe while I was away, then I checked to see if I had everything I needed in my rucksack. Finally, I geared up, grabbed my helmet, snatched my keys, threw my rucksack on my right shoulder and I was out.
Sweet and fresh, the night air twinkled in my lungs making my heart leap with joy and excitement. I locked the front door and went into the garden towards the shed. I became even more unsettled as I approached the wooden structure, unable to control my eagerness to hit the road. Inside, my precious, blue Yammy silently awaited for my key to bring her to life. I got her out in front of the fence, locked the gate, firmly settled my rucksack on both of my shoulders and fastened my helmet in place. Then, the long longed moment: key in place and with one twist of a wrist the engine roared and the pistons got moving restlessly. After the one-minute warm-up, I seized the clutch, shifted into gear, turned the throttle and I was off – a nice ride early in the morning – is there a better way to start a day?
At 3:35 am there wasn’t a moving car in the whole neighbourhood – a true delight for my right hand. So I twisted the throttle even more and rolled on the street, the engine rumbling pleasantly. The curves made me lean left and right depending on the direction and that simply unleashed a stream of adrenaline inside. The night sky was still dark, but not for long – in June, the sun comes up around 5 am, but the sky lightens from 4 am or so. I wanted to start my journey before light. I wouldn’t break this promise for the meeting place was close by now and I didn’t have long to wait. Soon, everyone involved on this trip arrived and at 3:55 am we were all leaving the bright city, streaming on the roads passing breathtaking landscapes. Everyone settled in their group position and our journey began.
